Hunting diaries have been a tradition since the 18th century, and Sandanona huntsman Elizabeth Park says she can remember in vivid detail almost every hunt.  Click here to listen to a few of her entries.

As an avid foxhunter and occasional follower of a basset pack (think beagle with short legs) I really enjoyed this story! It brings back memories of when my daughter was an infant and I whipped in for a beagle pack with her in a backpack. She had her own green jacket and whip. It’s a great way to get in some cross country running.

I have friends who are involved with a basset pack in Virginia. I had the great pleasure of walking out with the pack one beautiful day last year. This story really brought the memory back to me.

A lovely story of men, women, and hounds – well done Sarah Montague! Our countryside around Millbrook and north has remained pretty much unspoilt because of the foxhunters, beaglers, and other sportsmen who have purchased country retreats here. This preservation of a rural countryside is one aspect of hunting often overlooked by many.

I am so sorry I missed this piece last week, but wanted to say think you for covering a dog sport. Most of our breeds today were bred to do a job and so few get the joy of doing so toady – it is a joy to watch the excitement of the dog as they work at what they were bred to do. I hope you will cover more dog sports in the future, both those more traditional such as herding, tracking or obedience or more recent ones such as agility or flyball. Thanks again for covering a dog sport.

Can anyone tell me what the music button was at the end of the story about harehounds? I think it was a version of “You Ain’t Nothin’ But A Hounddog” but I didn’t recognize the artist. Thanks.

Thanks for the question! The version of “Hound Dog” you heard on Only A Game was the original recording. Though made famous by Elvis Presley, rhythm and blues singer and songwriter Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton originally recorded the tune.
The much-beloved and always informative Only A Game Music Blog made its triumphant return with last week’s show. Make sure to check it every week!
