Rudy never won a race. He did manage a little over 3000 dollars worth of thirds and seconds over the course of three years at Suffolk Downs, the track in East Boston where Canter's Ellen O'Brien collects most of her rejected runners. Rudy is just the sort of horse O'Brien seeks: slow enough to be a candidate for destruction, cute enough to appeal to a foster parent. Bill visits Rudy in Littleton, Massachusetts.
